Abstract

Financial geography is an important branch of economic geography, which is significant to improve the stability of financial industry that can promote the rapid and sustainable development of social economy. This paper firstly summarizes the developing process and major research fields of international financial geography from a geographical perspective. According to distinct mainstream research methods in different periods, the developing process can be separated into three stages that are the embryonic stage, the stage dominated by political economy and the stage influenced by the culture turn of economic geography. By using bibliometrics, we can divide research fields into the classic field, mainly including financial centers, spatial distributions and evolutionary processes of financial subjects and the interplay of financial networks and regional developments, and the burgeoning field majorly composed of different levels of financialization. Next, this study inspects the research progress of financial geography in China. Though it starts relatively late, its unique institutional context provides diversified explanations for specific financial landscapes. Finally, there are some prospects of financial geography in the future.
