Abstract

Under the background of export depression, firm export product diversification can not only mitigate the negative impacts of external shocks, but also promote industry upgrading by restructuring industries allocations. Due to the emergence of evolutionary economic geography, firm export product diversification becomes an important topic in economic geography research and evolutionary economic geographers argue that, due to local knowledge spillover, firms are more likely to expand new products which are related to local existing product pools. Recently, different type of agents has effect on the evolution of export products, such as the entry of FDI and intervention from government et al. However, the effects of intermediaries, especially trade intermediaries have got insufficient attention. Based on the background above, this study focuses on the effects of trade intermediaries on firm export product diversification by using China Customs data in 2002-2016. Specifically, there are 3 findings in this study: 1) Trade intermediaries help firms obtain product knowledge from foreign customers and thus promote firm export product diversification. 2) Trade intermediaries help firms learn product knowledge from other local firms and thus promote firm export product diversification. 3) Generalized trade intermediaries are more helpful when firms expand low-complexity products, while specialized trade intermediaries are more helpful when firms expand high-complexity products. This study has contributions at both theoretical and practical level. At theoretical level, this study not only provides new evidence for academia to understand the mechanism of firm export product diversification, but also helps academia learn more about the effects of intermediaries, especially trade intermediaries. At practical level, this study affords a new perspective for trade policy-making.
