Evolution Characteristics of Industrial Land of Urban Agglomerations in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River

The methods of centrifugal model and contribution measurement are used to analyze the evolution characteristics of the urban agglomerations in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (UAMRYR). Results show that: 1) The total growth of industrial land in the UAMRYR reached 300%,and experienced three growth stages which were start-up,acceleration and peak in 1990-2019. The industrial land accounts for 41.08% of the increment of the built-up areas,which was the main driving force for the development of the UAMRYR. 2) The concentrating effect on industrial land of the Wuhan metropolitan area,the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration and the Nanchang metropolitan area strengthened constantly. In 2019,they centralized 55.96% industrial lands of whole UAMRYR,meanwhile the industrial land increasing in other cities were lagging relatively,which leaded to an obvious spatial imbalance of industrial land distribution in the UAMRYR. 3) There was a strong positive correlation between the city size and the contribution of industrial land to urban expansion,which indicated that the growth of industrial land was the main factor to promote the urban expansion. 4) The distribution of industrial land in the three metropolitan areas was excessively concentrated and close to the important ecological areas such as Yangtze River,Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake. If the current growth rate is maintained,it is likely to cause serious ecological problems due to exceeding the regional environmental carrying capacity.
