Regional Accessibility Improvement and Evolution of Traffic Connection Network Structure: A Case Study of Hubei Province

Abstract

Based on the transport network data of 1985,1995,2005 and 2015in Hubei Province, this article explored the improvement of county accessibility and the evolution of traffic connection network structure in Hubei Province with grid cost distance, weighted average travel time, gravity center change, network density, centrality and centralization etc. Results are shown as follows: The overall accessibility and traffic connection network compactness have been significantly improved, but with obvious phasic features at the same time. The last ten years are the most rapid time of the growth of accessibility and traffic connection network development, eastern and central Hubei are about to form a integrated traffic connection network. Secondly, spatial accessibility and traffic connection network are both core-periphery structure. However, accessibility dominant area has a tendency to move toward western Hubei and county traffic connection network has an internal hierarchical structure with different status of key cities like Wuhan, Yichang and Xiangyang. Thirdly, accessibility improvement are shown as an anti-natural topography form, which is a periphery-core structure with periphery area improved faster and central plain area improved slowly. Reflected in the traffic connection network is direct connections increased significantly, network transfer efficiency improved rapidly and traffic connections between towns are more closely.
