Abstract

Born in the strategic management literature, the concept of industrial cluster has become commonplace within the economic geography. By using CiteSpace V and the review of extensive literatures, this paper systematically generalizes the theoretical contexts, research hotspots, knowledge base, academic debate and research frontier of international economic geography research on industrial cluster based on the literatures from Web of Science database between 1982 to 2016 in order to seek a breakthrough for the theoretical innovation of domestic industrial cluster. The main findings of this study are drawn as follows. (1) The research hotspots focus on cluster innovation and cluster networks, the relationship of cluster and regional development and the evolution of cluster. (2) The research content is gradually changed from the geographical agglomeration of economic activity to the innovation and evolution of cluster from the perspective of multi-proximity and path dependence and then deepening to explore the impact of cluster networks at different spatial scales on knowledge flows and innovation outcomes. (3) The spatial scale is gradually from special attention to embeddedness and local knowledge networks to the cross-cluster knowledge networks and then extended to emphasize global-local networks. (4) The relationship between industrial cluster and technological innovation and the relative importance of local and external networks are still controversial. Global cluster networks and co-located cluster are becoming the frontier areas of international economic geography research on industrial cluster.
