Spatial Evolution Mechanism of Modern Metropolitan Areas under the Combined Effect of Hierarchy-flow:A Case Study of Wuhan Metropolitan Area

With the advancement of globalization and informatization,the theory of urban external relations has gradually shifted from the central place theory to the flowing space theory. However,the construction of China's modern metropolitan areas (MMAs) faces a parallel background of globalization,informatization,industrialization and urbanization. This paper proposes that space hierarchies and flows (hierarchy-flow) have a combined effect on the spatial evolution of China's MMAs. Based on the function law of "hierarchy-flow", this paper constructs the spatial evolution analysis framework of MMAs under the combination of "hierarchy-flow" from three dimensions: spatial morphology,function and scale. The research points out that: 1) The mechanism of hierarchical space based on scale,functional and administrative hierarchy is mainly hierarchical agglomeration,functional coverage and power control. Meanwhile,the mechanism of flowing space based on multidimensional factor flows includes division of labor,cooperation,size borrowing and bottom-up feedback. The interaction of "hierarchy-flow" promotes the spatial integration and reconstruction of metropolitan scale. 2) Urban hierarchy affects the scale and direction of factor flows,which in turn affects the construction of the metropolitan network. Factor flows reshape the hierarchy and functional structure of the metropolitan area through the spatial redistribution of resources. 3) The case of Wuhan metropolitan area confirms coupling effects of "hierarchy-flow" in the spatial evolution of MMAs. Both promote the polycentric networking of spatial forms,the multi-scale network coupling of production functions,the harmonization of living functions,the co-construction and co-governance of ecological space,and the scale reconstruction of spatial relations in the Wuhan metropolitan area. The study facilitates the understanding of the mechanism of spatial evolution in MMAs,and also provides insights into the sustainable development and collaborative governance of MMAs.
